Thanks for the article on these lovely

NATALIE
COLE
Natalie Maria Cole was born in Los
Angeles, California, on February 6, 1950. Cole
is the daughter of one of American's first
notable black male singers, Nat "King" Cole. She
is an American singer and songwriter.
Eight-time Grammy winner, Cole
has to her credit eight gold albums and three
platinum albums. Cole's career was started by
the production/songwriting duo of Chuck Jackson
and Marvin Yancy. Her style is a mix of Jazz,
Blues, R&B, Soul, Pop, Gospel and Adult
Contemporary that makes for a loyal and
diversified following.
In 2000, Natalie was featured in
VH1's popular Behind the Music
series. On November 7th of that year, her
Greatest Hits, Vol. 1 was released. A
biopic on (and executive produced by) the
singer, The Natalie Cole Story,
aired on NBC-TV on December 10.
Cole began singing during her
college days at the University of Massachusetts
at Amherst. Manager Kevin Hunter encouraged her
to sing jazz at clubs and lounges, billed as
"Nat Cole's daughter." His friend, manager Bob
Schwaid had a songwriting/production duo looking
for a female singer. In Chicago, Cole met Chuck
Jackson and Marvin Yancy. The trio hit it off
and began working at Curtis Mayfield's Curtom
Studios, late in 1974, with arranger/saxophonist
Gene Barge. After many rejections from labels,
Cole sparked the interest of Larkin Arnold at
Capitol Records, her late father's label.
Natalie's first hit, This Will Be
was issued on June 30, 1975, and reached #1 R&B
song for two weeks, then, peaked at #6 pop tune
on Billboard's charts by Fall 1975.
In 1976, Cole won a Grammy for
Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for This
Will Be and Best New Artist of the
Year. She was nominated for Best Pop Vocal
Performance for her gold album, Natalie.
More #1 R&B singles followed:
Inseparable, Sophisticated Lady (She's a
Different Lady), I've Got Love on My Mind
and Our Love.
Jackson and Yancy and Barge won a
Grammy for "Sophisticated Lady." The trio earned
gold and platinum albums: Inseparable,
Natalie, Unpredictable, Thankful, Natalie...
Live, and I Love You So.
Cole hosted The Natalie
Cole Special, a TV special on CBS-TV,
with guests Earth, Wind & Fire,
Johnny Mathis, and Stephen Bishop that aired
in April 1978. She co-hosted the NBC-TV special
Uptown: A Musical Comedy History of
Harlem's Apollo Theater, featuring a
montage of her late father.
Cole married Marvin Yancy on July
31, 1976, had a son, Robert Adam Yancy, and
divorced a few years later. Many of the
recordings Chuck Jackson and Marvin Yancy
produced for Natalie Cole are on the 1990
Capitol CD The Collection, the 1995
EMI-Capitol CD I've Got Love on My Mind,
This Will Be: Natalie Cole's Everlasting
Love, and the HOL CD Sophisticated
Lady.
Substance abuse led to Cole missing concert
dates and giving erratic performances. In 1981,
Capitol Records opted not to renew her contract.
In 1983, the singer checked in the Hazelden
rehabilitation clinic in Minneapolis.
Six years later, she married
producer Andre Fischer, who produced
Unforgettable that won six Grammy's,
including Record of the Year. Her
Everlasting LP (1987) went gold and
yielded three hit singles. Stardust
(1996) featured another electronic-created duet
with her father on When I Fall in Love
that won a Grammy, in1997.
In fall 2000, Warner Books issued
Natalie Cole's autobiography, Angel on My
Shoulder, co-written with Digdy Diehl.
At that time, Cole appeared on the covers of the
November 6, 2000, issues of both Jet
Magazine and People Magazine.
